Mercersburg’s culture of philanthropy began with the school’s opening in 1893. Dr. William Mann Irvine, Mercersburg’s founder, turned to parents of Mercersburg Academy students, his Princeton College friends and colleagues, and the Academy’s earliest alumni, to help him build a school that would offer young people an unmatched education. Philanthropy is embedded within the fabric of the school, as evident in the historic, beloved “Princeton Class of 1888 Dormitory”; in the Edwards Room’s beautiful Tiffany windows, gifts of the school’s earliest alumni; and the Irvine Memorial Chapel built with gifts from alumni and parents in the mid-1920’s.
As it has been throughout its past, the very future of Mercersburg depends on voluntary support from alumni, family and friends. Philanthropy defines Mercersburg.
