Rick Hendrickson, Director of Athletics

Rick Hendrickson brings a diverse educational, athletic, and administrative background to his new position as Director of Athletics at Mercersburg.  Having served as a teacher of English and then being charged with building and developing the school's summer programming over the last 15 years, he has a depth of experience. That depth extends to his athletic background as well, from his time as a collegiate athlete to 24 years of helping guide the fortunes of teams varying from women's cross country to football.

Hendrickson is one of the most successful coaches in recent Mercersburg history. The Storm's wrestling coach for the last 15 seasons, he holds school marks in dual-meet coaching victories and winning percentage, coached 12 Pennsylvania independent schools state individual prep champions and 28 Prep All-Americans, and led Mercersburg to six conference championships.

"I'm very excited to lead the vision of Mercersburg athletics. We want students to define their experience in our athletic program as one that offers challenge, teaches the strength of overcoming adversity, and produces success on multiple levels, ranging from the first year junior varsity player to the college Division I recruit," states the veteran mentor.

Hendrickson competed on the collegiate level at West Liberty State College and received his master's degree from West Virginia University. His wife, Amy, works in the Academy’s business office, and their two oldest children, Jennifer ’03 and Rachael ’06, are Mercersburg alumni. Eight-year-old Gabriel attends 2nd grade at Mercersburg Elementary School and accompanies his dad to many athletic contests.

Monique Liddell, Associate Director of Athletics

Monique is the associate director of athletics and the head women’s basketball coach. She came to Mercersburg from Seton Keough High School in Baltimore, where she taught geometry and was an assistant women’s basketball coach. Monique has served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Morgan State University, and as a math tutor at Southern High School in Baltimore, where she assisted students in preparing for the Maryland Functional Math Test. She played professional basketball in Luxembourg, and was a three-time All-Conference selection during her playing career at Morgan State.

Marilyn Houck, Head Athletic Trainer

Ms. Houck has been taping Mercersburg athletes back together for over 20 years.  While she enjoys her job greatly, each year she hopes, for the sake of the athletes, to see fewer and fewer students!  Fortunately for the players and coaches, she follows the philosophy of getting the athletes back to a safe level of play in a reasonable amount of time after an injury occurs.

Ms. Houck particularly enjoys watching the young athletes grow and mature throughout their Mercersburg athletic experience.  It is rewarding for her to be able to follow the success of some of the athletes she has worked with as they go on to play in college.

Mike Collins, Athletics Facilities Supervisor

Mr. Collins has served as not only the athletics facilities supervisor at the Academy but also as an assistant ski coach. However, most students recognize him from his frequent presence at so many of the athletics contests. He is a steadfast supporter of the Blue Storm: He enjoys watching the Storm perform, improve, and succeed and recalls with a smile the 2005 baseball season when the team brought home both the MAPL and PA Independent School State Championships.

Jan Devlin, Administrative Assistant for Athletics

After having worked in offices for various companies over 16 years, Jan joined Mercersburg in 1986 as an Administrative Assistant to the Director of Athletics.  She is responsible for keeping the Athletic Dept. running smoothly,  including maintaining schedules, records, rosters, website, officials, transportation for teams, etc.  Jan is the “go to person” who can answer many questions or knows where to go to find the answers.
